DIUS Consultation - Learners have your say!
As part of the NFWI Education Campaign the government is consulting widely to develop a new policy of Informal Adult Education with will include everything that the WI does.

You now have a unique opportunity as a WI member and a learner to express your support for the future of adult education.  A very simple form has been devised by the government for individual learners to use Download the DIUS Consultation - Learners Have Your Say! and the NFWI is urging all its members to respond by filling in this form and returning it via free post to the DIUS by 12 June 2008.

The NFWI is preparing a full response to the consultation on your behalf which will express the members concerns raised through the adult education campaign.

Message from HM The Queen

WIs' Card for the Queen by Hazel Everett
On behalf of all members, the NFWI Board of Trustees sent a card to HM The Queen to mark her birthday on 21 April. This year the beautifully embroidered card featuring Sweet Peas with goldwork leaves was made by Hazel Everett, who is a member of Ash WI, Surrey Federation, and a Denman College tutor.

A letter of thanks has been received from Windsor Castle which says:

‘The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for the most beautiful birthday card, embroidered by Hazel Everett, which you have sent on behalf of all the Members of the Women’s Institute. Her Majesty was so pleased to receive your card and greatly appreciated your kind message. The Queen thanks you once again and sends her good wishes to you all.’

A World Without Jam Video
A World Without Jam is a visually striking short film which captures our members’ knowledge and enthusiasm for fighting climate change. We hope this film will motivate more people to start up new conversations about climate change and inspire them to take action together.

National Bus Concession
On 1 April a new England-Wide bus concession will be introduced that will enable those aged 60 or over and eligible disabled people the opportunity to travel on any local bus route in England, for free, during off-peak hours.

The new entitlement will give a potential 11.8 million people more freedom and independence, greater access to vital services such as hospitals and shops, and the opportunity to travel more economically when visiting friends and family living in other parts of England.

The national bus concession covers free off-peak local bus travel in England. It does not cover national coach travel or other modes of transport. However individual Local Travel Authorities are able to extend the travel benefits (such as to tubes, trains and taxi tokens) and offer additional local concessions (such as discounted leisure costs) to their residents at their discretion. These additional benefits will only be available to residents living in the Authority and not to visitors using their national bus concession.

People are advised to contact their local pass provider or visit www.direct.gov.uk/buspass for details of their national and local benefits or for more information on the national concession and eligibility.
