Going Places

Your choice of transport can reduce your carbon footprint. Find out the best way to travel.

It's time to put your best foot forward....

Step 1
Buy the smallest car that fits your needs. This can save energy and money. You’ll not only reduce emissions but may also reduce your Vehicle Excise Tax.
(Energy Saving Trust) (The Environmental Transport Association)

Try and limit how much you use air conditioning in your car as it uses more fuel, increasing the emissions from your car.
(RAC)

When you’re travelling on a long journey checking the road atlas to make sure you’re taking the shortest route possible can be a big help. For help with efficient route planning visit www.theaa.com
(Highways Agency)

Step 2
If you’re buying a new car, making sure that it’s fuel-efficient can make a big difference to carbon emissions. For advice on the environmental impacts and fuel efficiency of most new cars, visit the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) or call 0845 389 1010.

Step 3
Using public transport, whenever possible, not only reduces carbon emissions, traffic congestion and unhealthy air pollution…it can save you time, hassle and money.

Just think of traffic jams, parking problems and the costs of running your car!
If you do plan journeys on public transport remember to get the most up-to-date timetables and that using the web to book in advance can save you money. Also, try to invest in a travel card, and always check your ticket options thoroughly.
If you avoid driving for at least 40 miles a month, you will save around 2100kg of CO2 per year.
