Public speaking courses

Verbal communication skills are needed at every stage of life. Our public speaking courses prepare members for many situations from a local WI meeting, to a national meeting and into the public world beyond. Our courses aim to: develop your confidence and ability to speak in public; help you express yourself clearly without undue stress; and to make the best of use of your voice. We offer the following courses.

Stand Up and Be Heard
This one-day beginners course is an informal introduction to some of the skills required to speak in public. Maximum participants: 16.

Speaking with Confidence: Part One*
This two-day course builds confidence, develops your ability to speak in public and express yourself clearly without undue stress. Maximum number: 16.

Speaking with Confidence: Part Two*
This two-day course develops the voice and communication skills learnt in Part One. You will explore reading aloud, talks, presenting propositions/resolutions and being a member of a constructive discussion group. Maximum number: 12.

* These two courses together can be taken as an OCN Level 2 (1 Credit).

English Speaking Board
For those interested in progressing further, the English Speaking Board Spoken English Assessment OCN Level 3 (1 Credit) can be organised in federations or at Denman College.

Tailored courses
A variety of courses tailored for specific groups of students are also available. All courses include the basic techniques of communicating and a variety of skills from thanking the speaker and being the speaker, to making announcements and microphone techniques.
