Welcome to the Sussex East Federation

East Sussex Federation of Women's Insitutes was formed in 1919 having originally been part of the Sussex Federation which was the first to be created in the country in 1917 - just slightly earlier than the National Federation.
Today the East Sussex Federation is made up of 113 Institutes stretching from Rye in the East to Ditchling in the West, and Ashdown Wood near East Grinstead in the north with over 4100 members in total.

There are WIs along the coast in towns and many villages throughout the county - there is always one to be found not far away from wherever you may live in East Sussex.

Craft and art, home economics, community and international affairs, performing arts and leisure and learning interests are all catered for through the provision of workshops, classes, conferences, and festivals. Members can also enjoy many social events and trips to places of interest organised by both the federation and the institutes.

We are of course also part of the wider national picture and campaign to improve and develop conditions of rural life and provide the opportunity for women to work together to put into practice the ideals that the WI stands for.

Most East Sussex institutes are joined with 3 or 4 other neighbouring institutes to form a Group. For smaller institutes this enables them to enjoy speakers and activities that they may not be able to afford by themselves and it gives members the opportunity to meet others who also belong to the organisation.

We have just moved our Federation Headquarters to the market town of Hailsham a central spot in East Sussex after many years in the County Town of Lewes.

We are based at Falcon Way, Hailsham. Our friendly staff are always ready to help anyone who is interested in finding out more about the WI in East Sussex. Do call us.
